Solar modules in a system with these regulators never operate at their maximum power, as the regulator forcibly reduces the module voltage to match the battery voltage. The energy that remains unused is higher when the battery is emptier (as the difference between the voltage at which the modules produce the most power and the battery voltage increases). When the energy is most needed, the energy losses can be as high as 30% of the total energy that solar modules can produce.
b) Regulators that can charge the battery and power loads with a current up to 50% higher than the solar module current:
